Audiometric Testing
The testing of a persons hearing.
Conformance
The process is fully implemented, is working effectively and is regularly reviewed to ensure continuous improvement.
Consultation
Drawing on the knowledge, experience and ideas of employees and encouraging their participation and input to improve the employers Health, Safety & Environment systems.
Continual Improvement
Process of enhancing your Health, Safety & Environment system, to achieve improvements in overall Health, Safety & Environment performance, in line with your Health, Safety & Environment policy.
Dangerous Goods
Substances and articles that are potentially hazardous to people, property and the environment. They may be corrosive, flammable, explosive, combustible, toxic, oxidising or water reactive. Any material listed in the Australian Dangerous Goods Code.
Ergonomics
The study of the characteristics of people and their work systems with the object of achieving optimum interaction in terms of comfort, health, safety and performance.
Hazard
The potential to cause injury, illness or disease.
Hazardous Substances
Solids, liquids or gases that have the potential to harm human health. A material listed in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission’s list of designated hazardous substances or in State hazardous substances legislation.
Health Surveillance
Monitoring of individuals for the purposes of identifying changes in health status that may be due to occupational exposure to a hazard.
Hierarchy of Controls
The descending order of effectiveness of different types of control measures that may be applied following an assessment of possible risk control. The hierarchy includes elimination, substitution, engineering control, isolation, administrative control and personal protective equipment.
Incident
Any unplanned event resulting in, or having a potential for injury, ill-health, damage or other loss.
Manual Handling
Includes a wide range of work activities, such as lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, throwing and carrying, as well as repetitive tasks, such as packing, typing, cleaning and sorting.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
A summary of relevant properties of a hazardous chemical or proprietary product and which includes safety, health, storage, handling and emergency information.
Non-Conformance
There is no documentation or demonstrated implementation in place.
Partial Conformance
The process has been documented and there has been some instruction, but the process is not fully implemented.
Personal Protective Equipment
Equipment worn by workers to reduce risk from hazards.
Plant
Any machinery, equipment, appliance, implement or tool, including their components, fittings or accessories.
Risk
The likelihood and consequence of injury, illness or disease arising from exposure to any hazard (including hazardous substances).
Risk Assessment
Process used to determine the likelihood that people may be exposed to injury, illness or disease from any situation identified as a hazard.
Safe Work Procedure
A statement which describes how work is to be carried out. It identifies the work activities and outlines safety risks. It also describes control measures that will be applied to the work activities.
System
Planned approach to addressing issues that may affect health, safety or the environment. In a Health, Safety & Environment System responsibilities are defined, employees are trained and injury prevention measures are planned.
